Easy Apple Crumble Recipe

As the fall season approaches, there’s nothing quite as comforting as the aroma of freshly baked Apple Crumble filling your home. This delicious dessert has juicy slices of fresh apples and a scrumptious oat topping infused with cozy spices!

What’s the difference between apple crisp and apple crumble?

Many people often wonder about the difference between apple crisp and apple crumble since they are similar desserts that use fresh fruit, flour, sugar, and butter. Depending on where you live, the name of the dessert can differ. In Australia and the United Kingdom, crumble and crisp are used interchangeably. However, in Canada and the United States, there is a slight difference between the two.

A crisp is a delicious baked fruit dessert with a crispy topping made of sugar, oats, nuts, flour, butter, and spices. Meanwhile, an apple crumble features a flour, sugar, and butter topping. Our recipe is a perfect blend of the two. You could call it an apple crumble with oats or a nut-free apple crisp, but what it really is, is pure deliciousness!

Nut-Free Apple Crisp Ingredients

Here’s an overview of what you’ll need for this recipe. For exact measurements, keep scrolling down to the printable recipe card below.

  • Apples – I prefer using green apples, like Granny Smith, for this recipe because their tartness complements the sweet ingredients perfectly, but you may also use red apples.
  • Granulated sugar and Brown sugar – These will be our sweeteners for the filling and the oat topping.
  • Flour, Baking powder, and Cornstarch – These ingredients ensure the filling thickens properly and the topping is perfectly crumbly. If you are gluten-free, the all-purpose flour can be swapped with cup4cup gluten-free flour or gluten-free Bisquick
  • Rolled oats – rolled oats help create the crumbly, crunchy topping. If you are gluten-free, make sure your oats are certified gluten-free.
  • Lemon juice, Vanilla extract, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Salt – These ingredients enhance the flavor and balance of your dessert, and the lemon juice helps prevent the apples from turning brown.
  • Butter –  I am using unsalted butter in this recipe. If you use salted butter, omit the salt in the recipe and salt to taste.

How to Make an Apple Crumble

This autumn dessert can be prepared quickly with only 15 minutes of prep time. In addition to the ingredients listed above you will need mixing bowls, a 2 quart baking dish, a spatula and a fork or pastry cutter/blender. Follow this step-by-step guide to recreate it yourself.

Season Apples

To begin, preheat your oven to 350°F and use oil or butter to grease a 2-quart baking dish. Start by peeling, coring, and slicing your apples into ¼-inch slices. Mix the sugars, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon of salt in a separate bowl. Next, add the apple slices to the mixture and stir until the apples are fully coated. Pour the coated apples into the greased baking dish.

Make Crumble Topping

Making the topping is a breeze. Simply stir the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined. Cut in the cubed butter until the mixture forms crumbs and then evenly spread the topping over the apples.

Assemble and Bake

After evenly spreading the crumble topping over the apples, bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until golden brown. Allow the dish to cool at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving with your choice of ice cream or whipped cream.

Serve

This recipe yields 8 servings of a delectable apple crisp that can be enjoyed either warm from the oven or with a drizzle of homemade caramel sauce. To give your guest the complete coffee shop experience, serve it alongside a homemade vanilla bean frappuccino or a pumpkin spice latte!

Storage and Reheating

I suggest storing any leftover apple crumble in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap to keep it fresh. To reheat place the cumble on a microwave safe plate and heat in 30 second increments until warmed through. Don’t forget to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Freeze

This recipe is perfect for making a double batch and storing one in the freezer for later. To freeze your apple crumble, cover it with either plastic wrap or aluminum foil and freeze for up to six months. When you’re ready to eat, thaw the crumble in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, you can reheat the apple crumble in the oven for 30-40 minutes.
