Berry Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble Topping
This Mixed Berry Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble Topping features warm, sweet blueberries and blackberries with a crisp oatmeal crumble topping! Top with ice cream for an ultra satisfying dessert!
As far as desserts go, I will choose a fruit-based treat every single time. And if it is warm and topped with ice cream, it isn’t even a competition. Cobblers, crisp and fruit crumbles have always been my favorite.
This Mixed Berry Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble Topping is perfect for summer. It is easy and aside from the fruit it uses basic pantry staples you may already have on hand.
This is an easy base recipe to switch up based on what fruit you have on hand. I used a mixture of blueberries and blackberries, but cherries would also work well too. Whatever fruit you choose, just make sure you don’t forget the ice cream!

Ingredients for Mixed Berry Crisp
This is a healthier berry crisp with a minimal amount of sugar in it (the fresh berries are already nice and sweet, after all!). Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe:
- Fresh blueberries
- Fresh blackberries
- Granulated sugar
- Brown sugar
- Cornstarch
- Old-fashioned oats
- All-purpose flour
- Chopped pecans
- Butter
How to Make Mixed Berry Crisp
Fruit crisps are incredibly easy to prepare and they’re pretty much impossible to mess up! Here are the basic steps to making this healthier berry crisp:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the berries, sugar, and cornstarch.
- Grab a large cast iron skillet or deep dish pie pan and spray with cooking oil. Pour berries into the pan.
- Wipe your mixing bowl clean and combine the oats, flour, pecans and brown sugar.
- Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter or use your hands to blend in the butter.
- Pour the oatmeal topping over your berries, making sure to distribute it evenly.
- Bake for 20 minutes at 350ºF and serve warm with ice cream.
Can I Use Different Berries?
Yes! You’re welcome to use any mixture of berries that you’d like. You can use up to 4 cups of berries total.
Can I Use Frozen Berries?
Most likely, yes. However, frozen berries tend to release a lot of moisture once baked so you may want to add an extra tablespoon of cornstarch to the berry filling.
Tips for Making a Berry Crisp
- For a gluten-free berry crisp, use a gluten-free flour and certified gluten-free oats.
- Do not substitute instant oats in this recipe. The topping must be made with old-fashioned (rolled) oats.
- To make this dessert lower carb, use swerve sweetener instead of regular sugar.

I always love anything like this, so I would definitely have been like you – having trouble not to eat it all! Love that you added pecans, too … mmmm!
Aren’t crisps the best?! I would take them over any other kind of sweets!
Crisps are my weakness, Annie! I could eat this all day long! And the fruit and oats make it healthier, right? Gorgeous pictures, too. Pinned!
Absolutely!! Oats+fruit+nuts means it is pretty much diet food, right?! And the ice cream just means you get a good dose of calcium?! 😉
Delish! I really want to dig into that right now. I can totally relate to you on this- I have no self control with my desserts either! I sometimes go to the extents of having people hide what I made so I can’t find it (: Totally pinning this recipe, I want it so bad.
I am with you!! I kept saying to myself, “Annie…put the spoon down…just one more bite…put the spoon down…no just done more bite!” hahaha! No self control!!
Oh my gosh!!! This is so goooooood!!! I can’t think of anything more delicious right now!!
Thank you Olivia!
Crisps are so so good! I love the toppings and yummy fruits underneath. The best part is the ice cream melting a bit into it. This recipe sounds awesome!
I agree! I put butter pecan on top and it perfect!
I love the sound of this. Especially with pecan on top. Yum!
Me too Dannii!! I couldn’t get enough!
We are the exact same way! I rarely make us desserts, mainly because it’s just the 2 of us, and I know we’ll devour the whole thing. I’m always in awe of baking bloggers. How are they not 500 pounds? They must give a lot of food away to their neighbors.
You have totally inspired me to make a little crisp tonight! I have all these ingredients on hand, except blueberries. But I do have a bunch of peaches waiting to be used up! Looks like I’ll be picking up a little bit of ice cream on the way home. My husband is going to be so excited!
I completely agree! I don’t know how they do it! I hope you enjoy this as much as we did!
This looks gorgeous! I am a sucker for fruit crisps too and I think I could eat this entire pan by myself if you top it with ice cream. Yikes I know…but I figure since it has a whole bunch of fruit, it must be healthy right?;)
That is my thought too! 😉 Your basically getting a whole serving of fruit so that counts for something, right?!
This looks out-of-this-world yummy. I love the ice cream trifecta happening in the centre, and I too would have dug right in! Also, just read a bit of the post about celiac disease and I agree. My sister has celiacs, so I’ve been living in a gluten-free world for over a decade. Definitely not a fad! 🙂
Your totally right Allison! It is a lot of hard work!
That looks so fantastic!
Thank you Jocelyn!
I can relate on the lack of self control and only two people when desserts are in our house. I try to give them away or I’ll eat them all!
I can definitely see why you enjoyed this one, it looks so good! I love crisps!
It is just impossible with two people in the house! I grew up in a big family so if Mom made a cake or pie it wasn’t bad because every one just got a small amount. But with only two that means we split it right down the middle! ha!
Oh man. This crisp is TOTALLY calling my name, Annie! Totally gorgeous. LOVE all those juicy berries and OMG that oatmeal topping! Is it wrong that I want this for breakfast tomorrow morning? 🙂
Not wrong at all!! 🙂
I love fruit crisps and could eat an entire dish by myself. That self control goes out the window, so I don’t make them that often. I love this crumble topping and this looks delicious. I’m thinking it is time for a fruit crisp
I am in total agreement Cindy, I need to make another. One wasn’t enough!
Annie, I am a total sucker for crisps! When I made one earlier this summer, I husband barely got any and since there’s only two of us, I have no idea where the rest went. No idea whatsoever. I was not sorry! 🙂 Happy Friday!
We are practically twins Bri! I make no apologies for the amount of this I ate! 😉
You know…I don’t know why I don’t make these more often! I love them! Looks delicious, Annie!!
Thank you Annie! 🙂
This is the kind of dessert that I don’t feel too horrible eating. I mean, plenty of fruit and oatmeal can’t be all bad! I love crisps, and this looks just delicious, Annie! 🙂 Pinning.
Thank you Marcie! It is definitely one of my favorite!
I am loving this dessert.. lovely gooey fruits topped with crunchy and crisp nuts and oats… Ahh.. Bliss!! 🙂
Can you think of anything better?! I can’t!
Oh dear Annie. This is one lovely dish. It’s calling my name.
Thank you Kathy! 🙂
Oh my gosh, this crisp. It’s just the two of us in our house and I’m willing to bet we’d have a similar thing happen with the “disappearing” crisp. Love the mix of black and blueberries – and ice cream over top is a must! YUM.
Absolutely!! You simply cannot have a crisp without ice cream on top! 😉
Ohhh this looks amazing!! I love blackberries, and I especially love the pecan topping! Yummm!
Thank you Karen!
I’m totally the same way with desserts – they don’t last long in the house. But because there is a lot of fruit in summertime desserts, I feel better about making them. I recently made something similar to this, but I love your addition of pecans. I’ll have to incorporate those in the future.
Me too, and there really isn’t much sugar in these so as far as desserts go they aren’t totally awful!
Oooooo this looks like a perfect reason to break the no dessert rule for a while! Yummy!
Absolutely Julie! 🙂
I don’t cook a lot of desserts either for that main reason! I have absolutely no self control when it comes to dessert! Last time I made a crisp, I made sure to use a small pan just so I wouldn’t have too much leftover, tempting me. Love that you used two kinds of berries and that you added pecans to the topping, it looks amazing!
Thank you Izzy! Making it in a smaller pan is a good idea!
Annie, this looks ridiculously good! Nothing beats warm and toasty oats and berries topped with ice cream. Crumbles get me every single time! This is summer perfection, especially with the skillet. Love love love! Pinned!
PS your site hasn’t been opening for me in the last week … I don’t know what was up, but I’m glad it is working now! (SO glad 🙂 )
Oh no! Someone else emailed me and told me the same thing. I wonder what is going on! It is times like this that I wish I was more of a tech person so I could figure it out! But I am glad it is working for you now!
Oh how I want a bowl of this right this very minute 🙂
Aren’t crisps the best?! I cannot get enough!
