Today I’m sharing one of my favorite holiday hacks: slow cooker hot chocolate! There is simply no better way to welcome loved ones into your home than with a piping hot cup of rich hot cocoa. By making this recipe in the slow cooker you can keep it warm for hours and allow your guests to serve themselves while having snow day fun or holiday evening celebrations!

Just set up a quick little DIY hot chocolate bar with tops of toppings, festive mugs, spoons, and napkins, and you have the makings of a day they won’t soon forget. This crock pot hot chocolate lets you focus on your guests, and the classic flavor goes well with tons of different flavor combinations! It’s a million times more delicious than those hot cocoa packets from the store and makes the perfect Christmas drink!

Ingredients

  • Cocoa Powder, Chocolate Chips, and Unsweetened Bakers Chocolate – This mix gives you rich, complex chocolate flavor! You can use traditional semi-sweet chocolate chips or Lily’s sugar free for a keto friendly option. Feel free to use dark chocolate or milk chocolate chips if you prefer, but you may need to adjust the sweetener to get it just right for your preferences.
  • Sweetener – traditional sugar works great or use monkfruit for a low-carb, keto friendly option
  • Vanilla Extract, Heavy Cream, and Whole Milk – This creates a creamy, luscious texture that everyone will love! Feel free to use almond milk instead of dairy milk to reduce the carbs a bit. Whole milk can be replaced with 2% or other milk, but you will get a thinner consistency.
  • Peppermint Extract and Espresso – We love a peppermint mocha hot chocolate! You can skip this if you would like or replace the espresso with strongly brewed coffee instead.

Possible garnishes: marshmallows, candy canes, sprinkles, sea salt, etc. If you don’t like the peppermint mocha flavor, consider adding cinnamon sticks or caramel sauce instead!

How do you make Hot Chocolate in a Slow Cooker?

This is truly the easiest recipe ever. You don’t need to spend a ton of time prepping or standing over this recipe. Simply combine all of the ingredients in a slow cooker, set the temperature too low and cover. Be sure to whisk or rstir the mixture every 20 minutes or so the first hour, that is about how long it takes to warm through and melt the chocolate.

Will hot cocoa burn in the crock pot?

If you are worried your hot chocolate will burn or curdle in the crock pot, don’t be. The temperature is kept on low, and you will be whisking the mixture occasionally. The hot chocolate will not get hot enough to burn or curdle, it will just be warm enough to enjoy with marshmallows and whipped cream!

Do I have to add the coffee?

No, you do not. If you prefer traditional hot chocolate simply leave out the peppermint extract and espresso for a delicious, rich drink. Alternatively, if you want a Peppermint Hot Cocoa, use the peppermint extract and skip the coffee only.

Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate FAQs

Should I use natural cocoa powder, Dutch-process cocoa powder, or raw cacao powder?

I used natural cocoa powder (the most common variety you’ll find in the baking aisle). You could use Dutch-process cocoa powder if you like–It’s a darker brown and less bitter than natural cocoa powder. Raw cacao powder is light brown, less processed, has more nutrients and antioxidants, and can be more bitter. Any of these could be used in this recipe, but you may want to reduce or increase the sweetener based on your personal taste.

How do I make this low-carb?

For the best texture and lowest amount of carbs, use Lily’s chocolate chips, almond milk in place of whole milk, and monk fruit or Swerve for your sweetener. When made this way, each 8 oz cup has about 250 calories, 12.6 g total carbs (minus sugar alcohol from Lily’s chocolate chips), and 9.8 g fiber for 2.8 net carbs per cup.

Can I add alcohol to make spiked hot chocolate?

Absolutely, feel free to make this an adult beverage with the alcohol of your choice! Liqueurs like peppermint schnapps, Kahlua, or Baileys Irish cream are delicious but will add carbs. Vodka or bourbon can be added to still make this spiked hot chocolate recipe keto-friendly.
